Pepperells seeks future solicitors as it launches inaugural Vacation Scheme

Full-service, pan-Humber law firm Pepperells has opened applications for its inaugural Vacation Scheme – inviting students to join an exciting journey of growth.

Pepperells will bring in a number of students for an intensive, three-week summer vacation scheme starting in summer 2018. There will be two schemes run from mid-June until the end of July.

Candidates will be given the chance to work across a number of the firm’s business units, gaining a wide-ranging introduction to working at a legal practice.

Opportunities will be available across all three of the company’s offices in Hull, Scunthorpe and Grimsby and across the eight disciplines; Chambers, Criminal, Commercial, Dispute Resolution, Family, Immigration, Residential Property and Wills & Probate.

Solicitor Ryan Crellin, who is a director at Pepperells and leads the firm’s recruitment, said: “We have always looked to grow our own legal experts. If you look across the business you can see people have started with us as paralegals and moved through the ranks to become our senior staff members. The executive team is predominantly made up of home-grown talent.

“Not only do these schemes give the directors and the rest of the Pepperells family a chance to get to know the potential next-generation lawyers, they are an exciting way for the students to find out more about both life as a solicitor and life at Pepperells.

“The scheme is a win-win which gives young people real experience and helps us build a better talent pipeline – both of those things enable us to better deliver for our clients.”

The vacation scheme application window is now open and will close on Friday, February 16. The schemes will run from June 18 to July 6 and July 9 to July 27 respectively.

To be eligible students must have either completed a degree or be in the penultimate year at university. Pepperells will also accept applications if candidates have completed the second year of a four-year course; placements will be deferred until 2019 in this case.

At the end of the placement candidates will attend a closing interview with two members of the senior management team to discuss performance, feedback and the future.

Chief executive Ben Pepperell said: “We’re developing as a business with clear goals and strategic aims at the heart of everything we do – that has created real momentum which we will carry through 2018 and beyond.

“This project, along with the recent ratification by the Bar Standards Board to become a training centre for pupil barristers, are by far the most exciting.”

To apply students are asked to send a CV and covering letter to careers@pepperells.com requesting an application form which will be sent in reply. Applicants are asked to use the subject line “Vacation Scheme 2018”.
