Position Overview: As a Criminal Duty Solicitor at Pepperells, you will play a critical role in representing clients at all stages of criminal prosecutions. This includes providing advice, reviewing documentation related to offences, conducting research, planning and investigating matters, visiting prisons and police stations to liaise with defendants, drafting legal documents, and establishing a complete, accurate, and compelling defence for the accused. This position requires managing your own caseload, supporting the Criminal team, and actively contributing to business development and marketing initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients at all stages of criminal prosecutions, from police station interviews to court appearances.
  • Provide comprehensive legal advice to clients facing criminal charges.
  • Review documentation related to offences and cases, conducting thorough research and investigations.
  • Visit prisons and police stations to liaise with defendants.
  • Draft legal documents and establish a complete, accurate, and compelling defence for the accused.
  • Manage your own caseload efficiently and ensure the timely handling of legal matters.
  • Support the Criminal team and collaborate on complex cases.
  • Proactively seek and secure business leads, contributing to the marketing efforts of the Criminal department.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years PQE (Post-Qualified Experience), though applicants with more or less experience are welcome.
  • Experience in representing clients at the police station and in magistrates court.
  • Magistrates trial experience.
  • Duty accreditation (MCQ & PSQ).
  • Up-to-date knowledge of legislation and sentencing guidelines.
  • Experience with youth clients is preferable.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work as part of a busy dynamic team and independently run own cases.
  • Organized administrative skills.
  • Willingness to work out-of-hours to cover police station and remand court work.
  • Possession of a full clean driving license to cover police station and court appearances as required.
